The drive from Gwalior to Agra is one of the most travelled road trips in the region, and for good reason. In about two and a half hours you can go from Gwalior's hilltop fort to the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous monuments in the world. Here is our practical guide, based on the many Agra trips our drivers do every month.
The route at a glance
- Distance: about 120 km
- Time: around 2.5 hours, depending on traffic in Agra city
- Highway: NH44, via Morena and Dholpur
After leaving Gwalior, the highway runs north through Morena, the gateway to the Chambal region. Near Dholpur you cross the Chambal river, which forms the border between Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, before entering Uttar Pradesh and reaching Agra. The road is four-lane for almost the whole way.
What time should you leave?
If the Taj Mahal is your main goal, leave Gwalior around 5 AM. You will reach as the gates open at sunrise, when the marble glows softly and the crowds are thin. Summer mornings are also far cooler than the afternoons. For a one-way drop to catch a train or flight from Agra, we time your departure with a comfortable buffer.
Remember: the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.
Stops on the way
Morena
Morena is known for its gajak, a sesame and jaggery sweet that is especially popular in winter. It is a good place for a quick tea break.
The Chambal river
The view from the Chambal bridge near Dholpur is striking: wide ravines and a clean river that is home to the National Chambal Sanctuary, known for gharials and river dolphins. Boat safaris are available at certain points if you have time.
A simple Agra sightseeing plan
- Taj Mahal at opening time (2–3 hours).
- Breakfast near the Taj.
- Agra Fort, the red sandstone fort of the Mughals (1.5–2 hours).
- Itimad-ud-Daulah, often called the Baby Taj, for its delicate inlay work.
- Mehtab Bagh at sunset for a view of the Taj from across the Yamuna.
Have more time? Add these
- Fatehpur Sikri (about 40 km from Agra): Akbar's abandoned capital with the Buland Darwaza.
- Mathura and Vrindavan (about 60 km beyond Agra): Krishna Janmabhoomi, Banke Bihari Temple and Prem Mandir.
- Delhi: continue on the Yamuna Expressway if you are heading to the capital or the airport.
Tips for a smooth trip
- Carry a valid photo ID for monument entry.
- Large bags, food and some electronic items are not allowed inside the Taj Mahal; leave them in the car.
- Book official guides at the ticket counter rather than on the street.
- Agra city traffic can be slow in the evening, so keep extra time if you have a train to catch.
- Drink plenty of water and wear comfortable shoes; you will walk a lot.
One-way or round trip?
A round trip is ideal if you want to sightsee and return the same day: your driver waits and takes you between monuments. A one-way drop suits travellers continuing by train or flight, or staying with family in Agra.
Choosing the right car
A sedan is comfortable for up to four passengers. Families with elders often prefer the Innova Crysta for its captain seats and smooth ride, and larger groups can book a Tempo Traveller.
